Service to Industry Award

The Textile Institute considers that acknowledging service to our industry is important not only for industry, but also to encourage those within the industry.

The Textile Institute is dedicated to encouraging personal development and growth and to enable our members to progress their skills and knowledge for the benefit of our industry , therefore, we welcome the opportunity to present the Textile Institute Service to Industry Award at our Annual Conference.

This year, the winner of the Service to Industry Award is:

     
   
 
Trevor and Gloria Dawson
 
     

Our recipients of the 2003 Service to Industry Award need ed no formal introduction at the Annual General Meeting in November.  Both are well known for their service to the textile industry over the last 35 odd years.

Trevor Dawson is a Chartered Textile Technologist and has spent his career in the UK and Australia in the cotton and man-made fibres sectors of the textile manufacturing industry. He has held senior technical, production and sales management positions in several large companies.

He is currently a Board Member of the International Fibre Centre and a past member of the TCF Sector Advisory Committee to CSIRO TFT.

Gloria Dawson also has a long standing career in our industry whilst being a great support to Trevor and is a past member of the Textile Institute Committee.

Trevor and Gloria were awarded with a mounted and framed Service to Industry Award Certificate, the latest hard bound copy of Textiles and Definitions and a silver wine cooler with inscription.

The AGM was held on 19th November 2003 with the following results:

The Committee and Members said a reluctant farewell to Dougal Pleasance, past President, who after many years of service and fantastic support to the Committee and members, has now resigned.

Dougal has also kindly allowed posting of his paper presented at the 2000 Manchester World Conference in preparation for the very successful 2001 Australian World Conference. Again, you can view this paper on the Textile Institute website.

Following the AGM on 19 th November 2003, the Committee will again be led by Noel Emselle for a third term. Noel is a qualified Industrial Chemist who has spent over 40 years in the textile and plastics industries. He became an independent floor covering consultant in 1989 after nineteen years with the Australian Wool Testing Authority, including nine years as Manager of the AWTA Textile Testing business unit.

Noel is still a registered NATA assessor, and a Chartered Textile Technologist and Fellow of The Textile Institute. Noel appears regularly as an expert witness in floor covering cases and was the Technical Consultant to the Commonwealth Government period contracts for Carpet (BG12) and Resilient Flooring (BG167).

Noel is married with two married children and five grandchildren. His personal interests include Surf Life Saving (he is a life member of Ocean Grove SLSC and Surf Life Saving Victoria), SCUBA diving, gardening, and Australian Rules football.

Once again, the popular TI Web Site has been totally revamped for 2004, providing members with additional services available via the Textile Institute SA Section. We have included:

  • Consultants' Register – TCF & L Consultants are invited to provide a listing of their services to industry.
  • Jobs On Line – Looking for a new position or just want to see what's available in the market place, view our new Jobs On Line section on the web site.
  • Bookshop – A listing of books and publications available either via the Administration Office or Headquarters UK, with direct links to online shopping cart.
  • Posting of CVs – Due to many requests, we have created an area where you can post your CV for viewing. Contact to be made direct with the person posting the CV.

Funding Programmes Available

Professional Development Programme

In December 2003 the International Fibre Centre announced their Professional Development Programme to industry.

The PDP Programme is designed to assist individuals employed in the fibres and textile industries, to improve their skills through participation in accredited textile related education and training courses.

Objectives of the Programme are intended to support proposals which will:

  • Enable individuals to improve their knowledge and skills relating to the applications of fibres to textiles
  • Improve the knowledge, skills base and technical capacity of those involved with Victoria's fibres and textile industries
  • Provide an incentive for individuals to seek higher qualifications through textile training; and
  • Promote career path development within, and into the textile industry.

STP Funding Programme

The IFC STP Funding Programme is intended to support the fibre and textile industries in the acquisition and delivery of specialist training from domestic or international sources for the Victorian, national and overseas markets. The Programme involves co-funding from educational, research or industry bodies.

Training & Education Projects Programme (TEP)

Expressions of Interest are now being invited for Training and Education Projects Program (TEP) – 1 st Round of Funding 2004.
